Summary:
Lymphedema is considered a serious complication of many cancer-related treatment. Currently, little is known about the pathophysiology of lymphedema and there is no complete cure. One of the major reasons for lack of understanding lymphedema is that there has not been a good morphological mapping of the lymphatic system in human. The goals of the proposed research are to develop a standard protocol for taking three dimensional computed tomography images in cadaver and to analyze special relationship between different lymphatic pathways including lymph nodes. I have a broad background in my career as a reconstructive plastic surgeon and a basic scientist research in anatomy. As a postdoctoral fellow at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia, I started undertaking morphological study of the lymphatic system at Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Melbourne, Australia. I developed a novel radiographic method for investigating morphology of the lymphatic system and won prestigious Scientific Essay Contest, Basic Science Senior Award (the Annual Bernard G. Sarnat MD Awards) from Plastic Surgery Education Foundation, USA with my achievement. I expanded my research from normal morphology of the lymphatic system to pathological status such as post-surgical lymphedema.
